Therme Group is proud to announce a publishing collaboration with photographer, author, and cultural documentarian Mikkel Aaland to print and distribute Naked Sweat, alongside a facsimile edition of Aaland’s influential 1978 book Sweat.

Together, the two books form a dialogue across nearly five decades—linking one of the earliest contemporary explorations of global sweat-bathing traditions with a new, visually rich work that reflects on sauna culture’s modern resurgence and future relevance.

Originally published in 1978, Sweat was among the first books to document sweat bathing as a shared human ritual across cultures, introducing Western audiences to Finnish saunas, Russian banyas, Islamic hammams, Japanese mushi-buro, and Indigenous sweat traditions. The facsimile edition preserves the original work in its authentic form, offering new generations access to a foundational text in bathing culture. Naked Sweat builds on that legacy. Drawing on more than five decades of research, travel, and immersion, the new book examines the global renaissance of sauna and sweat bathing through photography, essays, and personal reflection. At its core is a simple but powerful framework: sweat bathing as a sustainable cultural system grounded in three interdependent pillars—the physical, the social, and the spiritual. The book features a foreword by Leonard Koren, founder and publisher of WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, whose pioneering work helped shape contemporary discourse around bathing, design, and sensory culture.

For Therme Group, the collaboration reflects a long-term commitment to publishing and supporting works that position bathing as essential public culture. Following Therme’s support of Social Sauna, Jane Withers’ influential exploration of contemporary communal sauna culture, Sweat and Naked Sweat together deepen and extend that conversation—bridging historical roots, lived experience, and contemporary practice.

“These two books speak to one another across time. Sweat captured a world of bathing traditions at a moment when many were disappearing from view. Naked Sweat shows how those traditions are re-emerging today, reshaped but still deeply human. Together, they express what bathing means as culture, care, and shared ritual.”

As part of the collaboration, Therme Group will support the printing and international distribution of both titles and integrate them into its broader cultural programming, including exhibitions, talks, and curated retail environments across Therme destinations. Mikkel Aaland retains full creative control and copyright of the works.

“At Therme, we see bathing as a universal language. These books help tell that story—with honesty, beauty, and cultural depth.”

Both Naked Sweat and the facsimile edition of Sweat were released in summer 2026, in time for the International Sauna Congress held in Oslo, Norway in September and will be distributed internationally by https://www.ideabooks.nl.

The books also connect to Aaland’s wider body of work, including the documentary series Perfect Sweat (produced by Bray’s Run and the Sauna Channel) and Sauna Aid, humanitarian initiative delivering mobile, trauma-informed sauna services to communities affected by natural and man-made disasters—an effort Therme Group is proud to support. Audiences can join Mikkel Aaland on Saturday, 17 October, at WellNest, a Nordic-style spa in a listed railway arch at London Bridge. At 5 p.m., Mikkel will be in conversation with Malcolm Shifrin, author of Victorian Turkish Baths, and Jane Withers, author of Social Sauna.

"Therme and I share a common vision of bathing as a positive cultural force in the world. I’m honored to collaborate with them in bringing Sweat and Naked Sweat to a new generation.”
